Art Gottlieb, the noted naval historian who has previously given us fascinating talks on Pearl Harbor and the Battle of Midway, will return to tell us about “The Battle of Britain,” its effect on the English people, and how they coped with it.

“The Battle of Britain” is the name given to the Second World War air campaign waged by the German Air Force against the United Kingdom during the summer and autumn of 1940.   The name derives from a famous speech delivered by Prime Minister Winston Churchill in the House of Commons:   “… the Battle of France is over.   I expect that the Battle of Britain is about to begin.”

Mr. Gottlieb is formerly Curator of Naval History, and Technical Director of Exhibits at the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum in NYC.

Gordon G. Chang, a lawyer, author, television pundit, and will speak on the current status of the USA relationship with China.

Gordon writes primarily on China, Asia, and nuclear proliferation and believes we will see discontinuous change around the world in the near future, so he is not into making long-range personal plans. He is author of two books, The Coming Collapse of China and Nuclear Showdown: North Korea Takes On the World. Gordon is a contributor to Forbes and on December 9, 2012 published an article in Forbes titled Move Over, Michigan, China Is The World’s Next Rust Belt.

Gordon is best known for his book The Coming Collapse of China (2001), in which he argued that the hidden non-performing loans of the “Big Four” Chinese State banks would likely bring down China’s financial system and its communist government and China would collapse in 2006.

He is a regular contributor to The John Batchelor Show, The Glenn Beck Program on Fox News, and CNN. He also appeared as a special guest on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Jon Stewart in 2006. In February 2010, he appeared on Al Jazeera English and argued that China does not have a lot of economic leverage over the US, and it is actually the other way around. In November 2010, he appeared on Imus in the Morning to discuss the Yeonpyeong bombing.

Ron’s talk will be on “Medicare Decision Making–Choosing and Using Your Coverage Wisely”. While this will be a presentation, it will also have an interactive element.  Since virtually every member of the audience will have had some contact with Medicare, questions and comments–both during and after the talk will be encouraged.

Ron practiced dermatology in Norwalk for 34 years and has a long interest in how seniors utilize Medicare, an insurance system unlike any other (it’s a patchwork created by Congress over many years). He is presently writing a book on mastering Medicare and today’s health care system.

Ron received his BA degree in psychology from Yale in 1967 and served his residency in dermatology at Harvard Combined Hospitals. He was an Associate Clinical Professor of Dermatology at Yale.

He set up his practice in 1977 at the Dermatology Center in Norwalk and also served on the Norwalk Hospital staff.

Ron retired from his dermatology practice in March 2012 and joined the SMA in the fall of 2012.

Mark Albertson, historical research editor at Army Aviation magazine and a member of the United States Naval Institute as well as being a member of the Navy League will return to speak to us about “The Great Patriotic War”. This will be a talk about the greatest land war yet waged: The titanic clash between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. The land war in World War II was not decided in the Pacific, North Africa, Sicily, Italy or France. It was decided on the Eastern Front. A savage, no-holds barred conflict which saw the loss of upwards of 30,000,000 lives in 47 months, and, changed the course of history.

David Koch is an Associate professor of History at Housatonic Community College in Bridgeport. Though a wide-ranging historian, David’s specialty areas are the Civil War and Native American History. He has worked for national historical and natural sites, promoting the nation’s physical and historical heritage. He has also lectured for organizations across the country on such topics relating to different aspects of the Civil War. David will speak on Lincoln and the Gettysburg Address.

Ken Delmar, author of “Winning Moves: The Body Language of Selling” will describe several subtle but powerful tactics and strategies of non-verbal communication used to enhance success in careers.

Ken has spoken around the country about his book, which has won a national award and has been translated into seven languages.

Mark is an historical research editor at Army Aviation magazine; and, has been a member of the United States Naval Institute for more than twenty-five years as well as being a member of the Navy League. He has published articles on issues of history and current events in newspapers and magazines and has authored three books: 1) USS Connecticut: Constitution State Battleship; 2) They’ll Have to Follow You! The Triumph of the Great White Fleet and 3) On History: A Treatise. He is currently at work on a fourth project, Sky Soldiers: The Saga of Army Aviation. Mark will give a presentation on the epic circumnavigation of the globe by the Atlantic Fleet Battleship Force in 1907; an important event in America’s quest to become a global power.

Our featured speaker will be Ken Roman, formerly CEO of Olgivy Mathers Worldwide, who will speak on the recent history of business in America, with an emphasis on the role of advertising.

In addition, Tom Lom will describe a program to be undertaken by the SMA on revitalizing and rejuvenating our organization, with a special emphasis on attracting what we are calling “young seniors”.   We will be asking for your support and participation in this important effort.

Art Gottlieb, historian; speaking on Civil War

Ken Roman is a former Chairman/CEO of Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide, the highly regarded advertising and communications firm founded by David Ogilvy. He joined the agency in 1963 as an assistant account executive, and served as its Chairman from 1985 to 1989. In his 26 years with the company, he helped build the business of major clients (including American Express, Unilever, Kimberly-Clark and General Foods), expanded Ogilvy & Mather’s global network into China, Korea and Russia, and grew its creative reputation. Before O&M he worked in several corporate communications positions. Kevin Roman will speak on the history of advertising and how it has impacted our lives.
