One of the best ways to get an overview of what is going on at DMA is to check out our latest newsletter. There you’ll find pictures and news about speakers, events, activities and new members.
Established in 1977, and now in its 45th year, the mission of the Darien Men’s Association (DMA) is to provide a forum in which retired and semi-retired men can find good fellowship, friendship, and fun amidst a range of activities designed to nourish both body and mind while promoting a sense of community.
We have a general meeting every Wednesday morning from 10 a.m. to 12 noon from the beginning of September to the end of May. In addition, throughout the week smaller groups participate in activities ranging from bowling to book club, current affairs to investments, table tennis, pickleball, golf, hiking, walks in New York City, our own singing group, and whatever other activity you want to start that can attract a following. About 6-8 times a year we have field trips to museums, the theater, or to other cultural events – always combined with a meal or hors d’oeuvres. Three such events that took place in 2023-2024 were: an evening of jazz music featuring members of the Norwalk Symphony Orchestra; a trip to the Gagosian Gallery in New York City to see an exhibit of paintings by Picasso followed by lunch at a nearby restaurant; and a Circle Line boat trip around Manhattan.
The highlight of our calendar is always the Speakers Program. During each of our weekly Wednesday meetings we present notable speakers on a variety of subjects. Recent speakers have included: an actress who recently authored a her book, Connecticut in the Movies; a professor and former Fulbright Scholar who provided an update on the war in Ukraine; a DMA member who shared his experience managing the renovation of the New LaGuardia Airport; and a former UConn professor and Connecticut state archaeologist who took us through a dig of Revolutionary War remains being conducted in Ridgefield, CT. We also heard from U.S. Senator Chris Murphy and former Congressman Chris Shays. See past and future speakers at: Speaker Listing.
We invite you to browse our website, most particularly our bi-monthly Newsletters under the Member News tab. These Newsletters provide a good sense of what the DMA is all about. The tabs titled Speakers, Events and Activities give a more comprehensive view of these particular offerings of the DMA.
The DMA is affiliated with the Darien Community Center (DCA) (www.DarienDCA.org) and our Wednesday meetings are usually held at the Meadowlands, the historic DCA building at 274 Middlesex Road, Darien.
We are an open and welcoming organization so if you are over 50 years of age and are interested in joining or learning more about the DMA, feel free to contact the Chairman of our Membership and Hospitality Committee via our general mailbox, dariendma@gmail.com.
