DMA Golfers Again Win Silvermine Cup
On June 24th, golfers from DMA and the Senior Men’s Club of New Canaan (SMCNC) met at the Silvermine Golf Club to fight it out for the Silvermine Cup. SMCNC undertook a major recruitment effort this year in an effort to win back the cup. I am happy to report that DMA again emerged victorious in a very hard-fought match by the score of 15.5 to 14.5. DMA now leads the series 3 to 1.
My sincere appreciation for the terrific participation we continue to have for this annual event. There are a lot of good golfers among the DMA membership. When we get a good turnout of our best players, we have proven to be a tough team to beat. Our appreciation to the following members of the 2015 DMA golf team:
- Tom Haack
- Tom Lom
- Jim Crane
- Terry Brewer
- Chris Filmer
- Doug Campbell
- Gunnar Edelstein

- Bob Baker.
The participants co-mingled for an enjoyable lunch after the match.
I expect next year’s match to be equally competitive so an early shout out to our best players about the importance of their participation in 2016. Again, our congratulations to the DMA team members for a good win and for their participation in another pleasant outing.
Enjoy the remainder of the summer.
Best regards,
Denny Devere
For those who missed my recap at a recent DMA meeting, the DMA – SMCNC (Senior Men’s Club of New Canaan) Golf Tournament was held at the Silvermine Golf Club on June 18, 2014. This is the third year in a row that this golf tournament between the two men’s organizations has been held. After losing the inaugural match in 2012, DMA has won the last two matches and the Silvermine Challenge trophy by identical 18.5 to 11.5 scores. Our own Terry Brewer won the Long Drive Contest for the second year in a row.
I am particularly grateful to the following players who willingly made themselves available to play on the DMA team:
- Tom Haack
- Jim Kelly
- David Mace
- Bob Baker
- Peter Carnes
- Alex Garnett
- George Gilliam
- Austin Schraff
- Tom Hayne
- Ron Kahan
- Mike Brennan
- Tom Reifenheiser
- Kevin Monahan
- Doug Campbell
- Joe Holmes
- Terry Brewer
- Jim Crane
- Fred Conze
- Chris Filmer.
DMA has a strong golf team when our best players are able to participate. Last-minute cancellations were kept at a minimum which made my job as Captain much easier.
I am grateful as well to Alex Garnett – our Chief Talent Scout and Recruiter. Kudos to Ben Briggs who made time to travel around the course to cheer on the team.
Harvey Place, my counterpart at SMCNC, and I arranged to have the foursomes sit together which enhanced the interaction and camaraderie between the two groups. This is a spirited yet friendly competition. Hopefully, we can continue to schedule this annual golf tournament between DMA and SMCNC for many more years.
Kevin Monahan has arranged with Sterling Farms for a DMA Golf Outing to be held on Friday, October 3 starting at 10:30 AM. We have 5 tee times starting at 10:30 AM enabling us to have 20 players. The cost per player is $42.00 including the golf cart. An announcement will be made at next week’s meeting at which we will have a sign up sheet. Kevin will be away that day and Alex Garnett will be covering for Kevin in his absence.
The second annual golf tournament between DMA and the Senior Men’s Club of New Canaan (SMNC) was held at the Silvermine Golf Club on Wednesday, June 26th. I am pleased to inform you that DMA atoned for our loss last year and emerged with an 18.5 – 11.5 victory. The Silvermine Cup will now be domiciled in its rightful home at DMA for the next year. Our own Terry Brewer won the Long Drive contest, and hit an amazing shot to also win the Closest to the Pin contest (1’6”).

- Joe Holmes
- Doug Campbell

and the DMA and SMNC Golf Teams together.
The series now stands at one victory for each team. I fully expect SMNC to field a stronger team next year in an attempt to win back the Silvermine Cup. As a result, we will need all of our best players to answer the call in 2014. The trophy and team members will be introduced at the first DMA meeting in September.
Enjoy the remainder of the summer!
Best regards,
Denny Devere

The SMA/SMCNC (Senior Men’sClub of New Canaan) Golf Tournament was held under very hot conditions on June 20th at the Silvermine Golf Club. Unfortunately, SMCNC was victorious in the inaugural golf tournament between the two senior organizations.
The general consensus was that this was a most enjoyable competition with good camaraderie and should be continued on an annual basis. With the full participation of our best players, we are hopeful that we can achieve a different result next year and deliver the trophy to SMA.
Along with Bill Atkinson, I would like to express my appreciation to the following SMA members for braving the heat and participating on the SMA team:
• Alex Garnett
• Austin Schraff
• Bill Atkinson
• Bill Thomson
• Bob Baker
• Bob Harrel
• Chris Filmer
• Denny Devere
• Hal Simpson
• Jack Fitzgibbons
• Jeff Freeman
• Jim Manning
• Joe Holmes
• Kevin Monahan
• Michael Poler
• Peter Carnes
• Russ Peppet
• Tom Glover
• Tom Lauri
• Tom Lom
• Tom Reifenheiser
• Tony Kwedar
• Wally McCurdy
• Woody Woodworth
Special thanks to Peter Carnes, Russ Peppet and Bill Atkinson for stepping up on short notice to participate on the team.
Photos of the SMA/SMCNC Golf Tournament will be posted on the upgraded SMA web site by September.
A good summer to all.
Best regards,
Denny Devere
Join Bill Atkinson and the other DMA golfers for some golf and fellowship. All levels of handicap are welcome.
The group plays at Silvermine Golf Club that was established in 1959 as a private club dedicated to the sport of golf. Located in northern Norwalk, Connecticut, on the Wilton town line. Its 27 holes allow ample playing access to novice and experienced players alike. For the casual golfer, the 9 hole course can be completed in a leisurely two hours or less.
The schedule is announced at the Wednesday meetings.
