Gunsmoke: “A Night at the Opry”, Tuesday, February 11, 2020

The DMA winter concert will be by Gunsmoke performing “A Night at the Opry” – a musical tribute to the legendary landmark of Nashville Tennessee.  The event will be from 6:30-8:30 at St. Luke’s Community Center.  At 6:30 there will be a reception of wine and hor d’oeuvres with the toe tappin’ concert at 7:30.

Today, people all over the world recognize the Grand Ole Opry as the show that made country music famous.  It all began on November 28, 1925 when an announcer on WSM introduced fiddle player Uncle Jimmy Thompson as the first performer on the new show called “The WSM Barn Dance.”  Now, over 90 years later, the show they started is still going strong.  Along the way, it has launched countless country music careers and led the way for Nashville to become Music City.

Hockey & Dinner, Saturday, February 8, 2020, 4:45

This year’s version of our annual hockey outing will take place on Saturday, February 8th.  The game starts at 7:00.  Prior to that, we will once again have a family style dinner at 4:45 at Ralph ‘n’ Rich’s—which is an approximate 5 minute walk from the Webster Bank Arena.  Dinner will include a salad (gorgonzola if you wish), three different entrees (veal parmesan, chicken francaise and salmon piccata), cookie and pastry tray, coffee, tea, soft drinks and wine.  Price, which includes a center ice ticket to the game and dinner, is $65.  Parking is free at the restaurant.  Car pools can be arranged.
Last year we had 24 people join the fun—including 8 wives/significant others.  This year we will cap the attendance to the first 26 who sign up and pay.  Sign up will begin at our first meeting in January.

Soundwater Cruise, Sept 19, 2019, 5:00

Take an evening sail on the Sound on the schooner Soundwaters followed by dinner at the Crab Shell. While aboard a naturalist will talk about the “Maritime History of Long Island Sound.”

Cost of the two-hour sail is $15 per person. There is space on board for a maximum of 40 people.

Participants are invited to bring their own snacks or beverages such as beer, wine and soft drinks.

Park in Boccuzzi Park, 200 Southfield Ave. Stamford.  It is on the West side of Stamford.  There is construction in the area, plus the usual I95 congestion through Stamford, so allow extra time.   The boat sails promptly at 5.  My GPS took me to Exit 6 then left on West, left on Selleck, and right onto Southfield.   A crew member will be at the parking lot to give you a parking permit and escort you to the Soundwaters.  It is a short walk but there are ramps and floating docks that are a bit unsteady.  There are port-a-johns at the parking lot they ask you to use vs. the on-board head.  There are also public restrooms off the boardwalk at the Crab Shell.

Dinner after the sail is available at the Crab Shell or Prime  – 46 Southfield Ave., Stamford.  You can also park at Prime/Crab Shell and walk 15 minutes south (to your right) on a pleasant boardwalk to the SoundWaters.

SoundWaters, founded in 1989, is the premier environmental education organization focused on the protection of Long Island Sound and its watershed.
