Edward Carabillo, 90, of Darien and Misquamicut, RI, husband of the late Nancy (Berry) Carabillo, died Sunday October 15, 2017 in a motor vehicle accident.

The son of Antonio and Laura (Pallanga) Carabillo, Ed was born and raised in Hartford and graduated from Weaver High School. After discharge from the U.S. Army, he attended Willimantic State Teachers College, where he met and married his beloved Nancy. Ed and Nancy were married for 50 years before she passed away from ALS in 2001.

A licensed hairdresser and gifted salesman, Ed worked many years for Clairol, finishing as a corporate executive in their NYC headquarters. Ed then bought a beauty supply business, The Brownie Company, in New Haven, where he employed a number of family members, including his 3 daughters and his nephew Rodney Carabillo. In his later years, Ed continued working in the beauty supply industry, most recently at CosmoPro in Norwalk, CT.

Ed is survived by three daughters and their husbands, Caroline and William Wall of Wallingford, Antonia and Richard Conti of Coventry, and Henrica and Aaron Holden of Granby, as well as grandchildren, Brian Wall and partner Jenny Macintosh, Peter and his wife Deanna Wall, Timothy and his wife Tina Wall, Kevin Wall and his girlfriend Amy Reno, Nicholas Holden, Christopher Holden, Faith Conti and Nancy Conti, several nieces and nephews, and his significant other, Natalie Einson of Westport.

Ed was predeceased by brothers Frank, Jim and Dom, and grandson Daniel.

Ed was very active in St. Thomas More Church in Darien where he served as a Eucharist Minister and usher, formerly organized the Children’s Mass, and managed the Count Team. He also volunteered his time in the Darien community and for several charitable events.

Ed’s biggest joy was “keeping the family together.” He loved sharing stories with family and friends. Grandpop, as he was affectionately called by family for his final 34 years, was an avid fan of the New York Giants, the Boston Red Sox, UConn and local restaurants. He devoured the New York Times, the Daily News, and 3 local papers, and Ed would gladly talk about national and local politics and events with anyone he met.

Bishop Emeritus Paul S. Loverde of Arlington, VA will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Dunstan Church, 1345 Manchester Road, Glastonbury, CT on Saturday November 11, 2017 at 10 a.m., with interment at Mt. St. Benedict Cemetery in Bloomfield. There will be no calling hours.

A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Thomas More Church on Thursday, December 21st at 10:30am in memory of Edward Carabillo, a long term Darien resident. Ed was very active for many years at St. Thomas More where he served as a Eucharistic Minister and an usher. He played a special role in organizing the Children’s Mass for many years and he managed the weekly Count Team for the offertory. Ed also volunteered his time in the Darien community and for several charitable events. He was active in the Piedmont Club, the Darien Men’s Association, the Darien Monuments & Ceremonies Commission and served as a Darien Memorial Day Parade official. Ed was best known for his love of his family, church and country. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: the ALS Association of CT, 4 Oxford Road, Unit D-4, Milford, CT 06460; or to Americares; or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

George Blackwell Cammann, son of Katharine Blackwell and Frederic Almy Cammann, died peacefully on Tuesday, August 15th at home.

George was born on January 27, 1926 in New York City. After attending St. Marks School, he served as a Navy corpsman during WWII, and graduated from Cornell University (BMA’50). George spent the majority of his career at Pan American World Airways and a decade at Northwest Airlines. Upon retirement, he volunteered at IESC and Norwalk Hospital.

He actively served in the life of Noroton Presbyterian Church, including singing with his strong tenor voice in the choir in his later years. A member of the Tokeneke Club in Darien for 55 years, George was an enthusiastic competitor in his Sunfish on Long Island Sound or on the tennis courts. Equally at ease on alpine or nordic skis, George was noted for his skilled horsemanship at Elkhorn Ranch South in Arizona and Elkhorn Ranch Montana. His greatest pleasure came with good friends and tight lines fly fishing at Megantic, Potatuck, and on the Gallatin, Madison and Yellowstone Rivers.

George is survived by his wife of 64 years, Nancy Colway Cammann; his daughter Amy Cammann Cholnoky and her husband John of Darien, CT and Big Sky, MT; son Thomas Rhody Cammann and his wife Bonnie of Huntington Beach, CA; grandchildren JB, Kari, and Robbie Cholnoky, and Matthew (Andrea) and Sarah Cammann; and his brother Frederic Gallatin Cammann.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 1 at 11am, Noroton Presbyterian Church, Darien, CT. Contributions in George’s memory may be sent to Bennett Cancer Center, Stamford, CT or The Open Door Shelter, Norwalk, CT.

Daniel Russell Cooney, 92, of Darien and Waldoboro, Maine, died on June 24.  Born in Brooklyn on Dec. 12, 1924, he was the son of Mae Bossert and Russell S. Cooney.  He grew up in Plandome, Long Island and in Waldoboro, attended Exeter Academy, and served in the U.S. Army in World War II in the European Theater.  After the war, he entered Yale University and graduated in 1950.  He worked as a securities analyst for Lord Abbett & Co. in New York City, and in 1973, he became portfolio manager of the newly established Lord Abbett Developing Growth Fund, one of the earliest funds to focus specifically on the over-the-counter market. After his retirement in 1987, he served as Trustee of Robertson Stephens Emerging Growth Fund.

Mr. Cooney  married the love of his life, Alice Knotts, on July 9, 1949, in Falmouth, Maine, and they spent 67 devoted years together between Darien and Waldoboro, raising two daughters, many Norwich terriers, and daylilies galore. His devotion to Alice, who predeceased him by nine months, was exemplified by the care he gave her over the last 25 years of her life, when she was suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease. He was supported in her care by a team of women who, in turn, watched over and looked after him.  His daughters are grateful for each of them, they said.

He had an infectious smile and a curious nature that endeared him to all.  A long-standing member of the Noroton Yacht Club, he owned sailboats in numerous classes that included Lightnings, Sonars, and Ideal 18s. He shared his wife’s passion for antiques, but his interest had a nautical focus, embracing everything from marine paintings, decoys, scrimshaw, and early rigging and sailmakers tools that he appreciated as much for their history as for their craftsmanship and beauty.  His interests were vast and ever growing, ranging from planting a collection of rhododendrons and rare pines to showing Norwich Terriers and making wine. But most of all, he was a gentleman of the old school in the truest sense.

Mr. Cooney was predeceased by his three siblings, James S. Cooney, Barbara Cooney, and David C. Cooney.  He is survived by his daughters Rebecca T. Cooney, and her husband Tito Pizarro, of New York City, and Alice Cooney Frelinghuysen, and her husband George L. K. Frelinghuysen, also of New York City; and two grandsons, Henry O. H.  Frelinghuysen of Stamford,  and Russell S. C. Frelinghuysen of Asheville, North Carolina.

He will have a private family burial in Waldoboro in August.  A memorial service will be held in his honor on Sept. 7 at 11 a.m. at St. Luke’s Parish, 1864 Post Road, Darien.

Michael Howard Savage

Michael Howard Savage, 78, passed away on Friday, May 12, 2017, surrounded by his family at his home in Darien. Michael was born in Bridgeport in 1938, son of the late Manuel and Lillian Savage. He grew up in Hollis Hills, New York.

Michael graduated from Dartmouth College with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. He was a member of the swimming team and served as pianist for the Dartmouth Symphony Orchestra. He also earned a Master’s Degree in Guidance and Education and a Ph.D. in Educational Administration from New York University.

For more than 37 years, Michael worked in the field of education, primarily with the New York State Education Department with responsibility for Federal, New York State and New York City funded programs in public schools in Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, The Bronx, and Staten Island, as well as Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester and Putnam counties. He was also responsible for New York State School Registration for all public and private elementary and secondary schools in the New York metro area. Following his retirement from the New York State Education Department, Michael was a Consultant to the New York City Board of Education, advising on Federal and State funded educational programs.

Michael remained actively involved with his alma maters until his death. He served as a member of the Executive Committees of the Dartmouth Club of New York and the Dartmouth Alumni Association of New York City for more than 35 years. He was also a member of the Dartmouth Club of Fairfield County and the Dartmouth Club of Eastern Fairfield County. In addition to his involvement with Dartmouth, Michael was a Founding Member of the New York University Alumni Association and served as a member of its Board of Directors for more than 20 years. He was a member of The Yale Club of New York City, Darien Men’s Association and The Country Club of Darien. Michael enjoyed golf, swimming and music.

Michael is survived by his loving wife, Mary Beth, as well as his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Winifred and Thomas Lom and Margaret and Stephen Connelly of Darien, and Karen and Richard Lombardo of East Hills, New York. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Andrew Lom and his wife, Terry Wasserman-Lom, Stacy and Courtney Lom, Jessica and James Connelly, and Katie Lombardo.

John Fleming Cagnina, formerly of Rowayton, Conn., passed away peacefully on May 13 in Westerly, R.I., after living happily for three years at StoneRidge, a retirement community in Mystic, Conn. He was two days shy of his 87th birthday. His death was a result of heart disease and dementia.

A 44-year resident of Rowayton, John served as a Commissioner of the Sixth Taxing District and Chair of the Rowayton Civic Association. An enthusiastic skier and sailor, he was a founding member of the Rowayton Yacht Club at Hickory Bluff. He was a long-time member of St. John Church (Darien) where he  was active in its choir, and served on the board of Hill Top Homes, a senior residence, in Rowayton.

Born in the Bronx, N.Y., to P.J. and Margaret Cagnina, John held a B.S. from Fordham University and an MBA from the University of Massachusetts. He was navigator of the destroyer Richard E. Krause and also served at U.S. Naval Headquarters in London, England. John then joined General Electric, where he held a variety of positions. In 1995 he retired from BMW of North America after leading Human Resources for 20 years.

John is survived by his wife of nearly 59 years, Anne Shea Cagnina, their children: Tom, Mary Sweeney (Jim), Jean McCutcheon (Larry), and Matt (Jodi); and six grandchildren: Cate and Robert Rung, Ned and Will McCutcheon, and Max and Brock Cagnina. He was predeceased by his brother, Vincent.

 
A funeral service will be held Tuesday, May 23 at 1:30 p.m. at St. John Church followed by interment in Union Cemetery, Rowayton. A memorial will be held at StoneRidge at a later date. James Stephen Armour died in Stamford on Oct. 7, 2016, at the age of 86. He is survived by his wife, former Darien Representative Town Meeting Moderator Karen Ahlberg Armour.

Jim Armour’s memorial service will be held Saturday, May 20th at St Lukes, 1:00 to 3:30.

Jim was born on Jan. 27, 1930, in Brooklyn, and grew up in Larchmont, N.Y., where he met lifelong friends and fly-fishing buddies Larry Rosenstadt, Ed Nusbaum, and Joe Andress; became an Eagle Scout; and graduated from Mamaroneck High School.

Jim earned a bachelor of arts in political science from Syracuse University, where he was a proud member of Alpha Phi Omega, the only non-sectarian and racially integrated fraternity operating on campus at that time.

He was profoundly affected by his U.S. Army service in the Korean War and recounted many spellbinding stories of his more-than-a-year’s time in active combat. Jim earned a master’s of business administration from Cornell University and went on to build a career in marketing and sales in the paper and printing industries.

He met Karen at a Kentucky Derby party in Manhattan, and they married in 1966. They settled in Darien, where they raised their daughters and, later, he became an enthusiastic member of the Darien Men’s Association.

Jim and Karen continued the party throughout their 50 years of marriage. After they retired, they began spending summers surrounded by friends and their growing family on beautiful Lake Massawippi in North Hatley, Quebec.

Jim adored being a father and was endlessly proud of his daughters’ professional accomplishments, expertise, and talents. Family and friends will remember him for his wisdom, dance moves, charades prowess, and relentless sense of humor (affectionately known as “pun-ishment”), among many other things.

He was a kind, caring person and a devoted dog owner. In addition to trout fishing, playing golf, and listening to music, Jim enjoyed boating, and he always said that his first job — as a launchman at the local yacht club when he was a teenager — was his favorite.

In addition to his wife, Jim is survived by three daughters: Rabbi Victoria Armour-Hileman of Atlanta; Allison Armour-Garb (Bradley) of Slingerlands, New York; and Julie Armour (Tom Jones) of Summit, N.J.; and grandchildren Isabel, Zev, Charlie, and Carson. He was predeceased by his sister, Jacqueline Armour, and by his parents, Beatrice Peters (née Kalt) and David Armour.

A memorial service is being planned for later in the fall, as well as a private burial in North Hatley next summer.

The family would particularly like to thank Jim’s caregiver Dieula Fleury for her loving encouragement. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jim’s honor can be made to Darien EMS-Post 53.

Peter Bonneau Hallock passed away peacefully recently in St. Petersburg, FL.

Born on June 29, 1934, Peter grew up on Long Island, New York. He attended Cornell University and NYU, married and had a successful career in human resources and executive search. His life took him to Berwyn, PA; Corinth, MS; Pelham, NY; and Fairfield County, CT.

He was an avid reader, articulate on a wide range of subjects and warm to all who knew him. Friends from across the years and country shared the sentiment, calling him: “the most thoughtful person I ever knew”; “always there with a smile”; “made me feel like the most important person in the room” and “was there for me in hard times”. He was a devoted father, taking the family on his two-week company vacations on trips to Colorado, Maine, Florida and many points in between. A lifelong baseball fan of the NY Giants and then the Mets, he said Willie Mays was the greatest player he ever saw. He loved his family, country and a good time, in that order.

A direct descendant of the original Peter Hallock, who is considered the first New World settler on Long Island (1630), he was the second son of Orrin Stoddard Hallock and Bernice Bonneau. Peter’s older brother Orrin predeceased him; his younger sister Susan Swezey lives in Moorestown, NJ with her husband Gordon. His cousin Larry Stirling, who was like a brother to him, lives in Monroe, NJ with his wife Lucille. Peter is survived by Suzanne (Mimi) Hallock and their four children: Steven and his fiancé Laura Domanski and his son Ryan and daughter Caroleena; Matthew and his wife Gina and sons Christopher and Justin; Thomas and his wife Julie Armstrong and son Zack; and Elizabeth and her husband David Wishner and sons Jensen and Jasper. Mimi, Steven, Tom, Elizabeth and families live in St. Pete; Matthew and family reside in Fairfield, CT.

Always fond of the ocean, Peter’s ashes will be scattered in the waters off Long Island, New York on Saturday, May 6. John Ross Hamilton, 92, a resident of Darien, CT passed away February 15, 2017 after a short illness in Bennington, Vermont.

Born October 3, 1924 in Winchendon, MA, John was the youngest child of May Davina Ross Hamilton and The Reverend Rollo Albert Hamilton. An active member of Boy Scout Troop One in Flushing, NY, founded in 1910 by Daniel Beard and the Rev. Hamilton, John earned the rank of Eagle Scout and attended college with the support of an Eagle Scout Scholarship. His enthusiasm for scouting never abated and in later life he was both a Cub and Boy Scout Troop leader in Darien, CT.

He earned his BS in Physics in 1946 from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Princeton University and graduated as an Ensign from Columbia Midshipman’s School serving in Guam during World War II. After the war, he completed his MBA at Harvard University.

John pursued a career in corporate finance, joining Procter and Gamble in 1949. He subsequently worked for Colgate Palmolive, Lever Brothers, The Bulova Watch Company, Crowell & Collier MacMillan and US Industries.

Leaving the corporate world in 1974, John pursued a PhD in Accounting at Boston University while teaching accounting and business finance at the collegiate level. He began his academic career at the University of Hartford, later joining the faculty at Western Connecticut State University, and retiring as an Associate Professor of Accounting from Fordham University in 1988.

His community interests included serving as a member of the Board of Finance for the town of Darien, Connecticut and a member of the Board of Directors of the Darien Nature Center in the 1980s.

He is survived by his companion, Harriette C. Thorne of Darien; his children, Heather C. Hamilton, and husband, Edd G. Lyon, MD, of Bennington, VT; John Ross Hamilton, Jr. and wife, Cynthia J. Babler, of Chicago, IL; Robert A. Hamilton and wife, Jackie Chu, of New Haven, CT; Hilary B. Hamilton and husband, D. Maurice Kreis of Hartland, VT; his granddaughters Anyata May and Isabel Helen Hamilton, 5 nieces and nephews, 13 great nieces and nephews and 14 great great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife, Roberta L. Hamilton, his second wife Barbara T. Hamilton, and his siblings, Dr. Donald Ross Hamilton, Elizabeth Hamilton Firehock, and Gordon Ross Hamilton.

Celebration of Paul’s life, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Saturday, January 28, 2:30 p.m.

Paul Steven Larson of Norwalk and former longtime Darien resident, died on January 24, 2017 at home, surrounded by his devoted family, after a courageous cancer battle. Paul took on his disease as he took on everything in life, with tenacity and grace.

Paul was born May 22, 1943 in Bristol, CT to Arnold Lee Larson and Lou Manchester Larson. He graduated from Wesleyan University in 1965 where he captained the track and cross country team and was a member of Kappa Nu Kappa fraternity. He obtained his M.B.A. from the University of Rochester in 1967. He proudly served his country in the United States Naval Reserve as a supply officer aboard the U.S.S. Caloosahatchee, and retired as a Lieutenant Commander.

Paul began his career as a securities analyst at Chase Investors Corp., was then an assistant vice president at the General Electric Pension Fund, and finally an equity analyst/portfolio manager with General Reinsurance.

Paul will be remembered for his compassion for others, his kindness, his spirit, and his generosity. His unconditional love for his family was always his first priority. He was quick-witted and always had a joke at-the-ready. He believed laughter was the remedy for all. He truly loved his country, Christmas, and the 4th of July, as well as boating and beach vacations in Maine. He also was a diehard Red Sox fan. He was a friend of Bill’s for 15 years, which brought him serenity and peace.

Paul firmly believed in giving back to one’s community. He served as a Darien youth sports coach, Holmes School PTA co-chair, and Darien Boat Club officer. Paul served on the Darien RTM and the Board of Education. He was a member of Darien Kiwanis Club, Darien Men’s Association, the Country Club of Darien, and St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. After moving to Norwalk in 2004, Paul became an officer with the Norwalk Association of Silvermine Homeowners, a volunteer at the Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk, and a member of the Norwalk Community Chorale.

He is survived by his wife and best friend, Molly Schumann Larson whom he married July 20, 1968; his daughters Katherine Larson Farnham (Barrett) of Chester Springs, PA, and Anne Larson Brakeman (Robert) of Monroe, CT; his son, Steven Hamilton Larson (Jessica) of San Francisco, CA; his brother, Lee Larson (Kathy) of Lyme, NH; two sisters, Sally Carignan and Mary Larson of Brunswick, ME, and several nieces and nephews. Four grandchildren also survive him: William and Elizabeth Brakeman and Helen and Marshall Farnham. His beloved standard poodles, Phineas and Atticus, also survive him.

Calling hours are from 4-7pm on Friday, January 27, 2017 at Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road Darien. A Celebration of Paul’s life will be held at 2:30pm on Saturday, January 28, 2017 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 1864 Post Road, Darien.

Obituary: Robert Birney Crane, Darien High Class of ‘36, life-time competitive sailor

Robert Birney Crane of Darien, CT crossed the bar on Wednesday November 30th, 2016. Born to Albert Eli Crane and Florence Luray Overton Crane on February the 8th 1920 in Plainfield, N.J. , Bob thoroughly enjoyed life for over 96 years. He moved to Darien with his family at the age of 8. Bob attended Miss. Thomas’s School and Saint Luke’s Academy before graduating from the Darien High School in 1936. Following his graduation Bob attended Middlebury College and New York University graduating with a BS Degree in Engineering in 1942.

So many things would bring a warm smile to Jim’s face — particularly his family and friends; and, that smile would grow even larger when a big slice of apple pie with ice cream or a pizza from Post Corner was part of celebrating life with those whom he loved.

Jim’s passion for life permeated everything he undertook: the many successes he had across a full and productive career at IBM; his service to our Country as a Naval Officer; the impact his role as Elder had on the community he was part of at Noroton Presbyterian Church; the joy he experienced being with friends at the Tokeneke Club playing tennis or enjoying a good meal; his volunteer work at Habitat for Humanity; and, the tranquility that sailing brought to him on the open waters. Jim was an avid opera enthusiast, tennis player, student of photography, an avid reader, especially in the areas of the Civil War and international relations, history, contemporary world issues, scripture and religion; and an enthusiastic fan and follower of tennis, football and NCAA woman’s basketball. As an aftermath of being a varsity lacrosse player at the University of Massachusetts, Jim was a lifelong follower of NCAA lacrosse.

James Forrest Manning III, a retired executive of the IBM Corporation and resident of South Norwalk, CT, died Saturday, July 23rd after a happy, generous, and dynamic life. He was 86 years old.

Born in Washington D.C., and raised in Harrison, New York, Jim was the son of Marguerite Wise Manning, the daughter of dairy farmers, and James F. Manning, Jr., whose family’s stone company supplied the Colorado marble for the Lincoln Memorial and the Tomb of the Unknowns in Washington. A graduate of Deerfield Academy and Williams College, Jim served three years in the US Air Force, following the example of his father, a WWI fighter pilot who earned the Distinguished Service Cross after shooting down seven German fighter planes over Doulçon, France.
